Feeding baby sparrow & pictures.

This is when I first got the baby Sparrow.

See how big I am getting. I have learned to fly now. I learned to fly in just one week of being here. As soon as I learn to eat seeds and not need the formula...I will get to go free outside. I can not wait for my big day.

The baby is starting to eat seeds...YEA!!!

I have discovered the baby will do a cute little wiggle dance. I call it the feed me dance. She fluffs her feathers up and shakes her little back side when she thinks it is time to eat... it 's like she is just so excited that we are feeding her, she just can not wait to get that first bite of food. Now she is even chirping while I feed her. She has also started to make a little cooing noise sometimes. She is so cute. This is an experience that has been very enjoyable. I never realized they developed so fast. I make a certain little whistle sound and she will start chirping right back to me like she is talking to me. She also answers to the dogs squeaky toy. She stays outside when we are outside during the day in her cage & she gets to talk to the other birds. She has been a delight. She knows the Sparrows are her family she does a lot more talking when she hears one of them.

The baby has started drinking water from her water cup yesterday. I saw her take a bath today for the first time. She eats about every 2 hours during the day and sleeps at night. Today she did go a little longer in between feeding her the formula because she ate more seeds. She spends her days in a cage hung outside our door so she can watch the other birds and talk to the other birds that are coming in for our bird feeders in our trees.

When I have to go to town & have one of the other family members feed her.... they say she eats about every hour. The next day she is like that with me & wants me to feed her about every hour she eats less but more often. I think she just wants to make sure I am still here...LOL Then she returns to normal the next day.

I got a phone call the other day when I was at town & was asked where is that birdies mommy is....LOL....I had to tell them I am on my way home.

She is still eating formula. I have her on Exact Bird Formula. I warm the formula to be luke warm only, so not get the formula to hot or it will burn the baby. Care must be taken not to give her the  formula to fast or too much or it can get in her lungs. I mix the formula with water and make it a thin paste texture not to thick or I can not get it out of the syringe or eye dropper. You do not want it to think or it will go into the lungs to easy. There are some home made formulas you can make and I will try to put a link to one of those places at the bottom of the page with more care instructions. I do not give her any water by the syringe ... she gets enough water in the formula and it is better that she drinks it from the water dish. The water is to easy to force into the lungs. I feed her about every 3 hours now. She is eating some seeds and just loves the millet seed stick. She is not eating seeds good enough to be on her own yet. Today the weather seemed to be a little hard on her so I brought her in the house without the A/C. I am trying to keep her adjusted to the weather the best I can... I know she will have to live out in it when she is set free.

Today this little bird was set free. I hope you have enjoyed the last of the pictures of her.

Get Read ...Get Set .............................................GO....

Today was my BIG day. The baby was ready to leave the cage today. We opened the cage door & waited two hours for her to leave...well, she did nothing. We decided to put her millet seed on the outside of the cage door because she just loves her millet seeds. After waiting another hour she came out. She stayed around the cage for about 20 min. Then she decided to take her first flight. She flew to the tree in the yard. Then she went to the neighbors tree. She went around the neighbor hood and came back home. When she was ready to come home she was sure peeping so I did my whistle back to her and she found her way back to our trees & found the food. I think she has a friend already.... One tuckered out little bird at the end of the day. We have left her cage outside where we hung it so she can come & go until she is ready to leave for good. I will continue to keep fresh water and food in the cage for her until I see no signs of her returning to the cage. We will surely miss our little girl but I know she will be a happy little girl. We are so thankful we were able to keep her alive until she was ready to go on her own.

She has learned to get on the feeders pretty good now.

Our little girl is still coming to our yard to eat. She has a nice little friend now that always comes in with her. She lets me know she is out there if I am outside by trying to get as close to me as she can & she just talks away to me, as if she is telling all about her day. She always comes home when there is a storm & cries outside until I go out and talk to her and let her know it is ok. Then she clams down after I go out and talk to her. She is so Precious.

Spring 2004

Our little Sparrow is the one to the left of this picture with a couple of her friends.

The little sparrow is still eating at our place with her friends. She will eat off our platform we put the seeds on out our living room window in the yard. She always lets me know she is out there. She is the only one that will keep looking in the window to see if we are in there. To make sure I will do my special little whistle sound I made with her as a baby and she will look & listen, then start talking back..... the rest of the birds just ignore it with no reaction. It is so Good to see her doing so well with her little friends.
